DataKirk Summer Smart Club – A Week of Innovation and Fun!

We’re happy to share the exciting activities from the DataKirk Summer Smart Club, which took place from July 8th to July 12th, 2024. This week-long program was packed with technology and creativity, designed to ignite the passion for STEM in young minds.

Objectives/Goals of the Camp

The primary objectives of the Summer Smart Club were to introduce Micro:bit coding and programming, engage in environmental exploration, and develop wearable technology skills. Participants also learned about robotics and programming, fostered team-building and collaboration, and enhanced their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Combining education with fun, the program included engaging activities such as crossword puzzles and word searches to balance learning with enjoyment.

Highlights of the Week

The programme featured a variety of activities designed to build technical skills and foster creativity. The week kicked off with an introduction and ice breaker, where participants got to know each other through a fun game of “Two Truths and a Lie.” This activity set the stage for a week of collaboration. Kids then learned about Microbit components and wrote a program to log environmental data, visualising the data using Microsoft Excel. Participants created a wearable step counter using the Microbit accelerometer and engaged in an activity to collect and visualise the data.

Another highlight was the Sphero Bot Dribbling Challenge, where teams wrote simple code to control Sphero bots and navigated them through an obstacle course, enhancing their understanding of robotics and programming. Kids also developed a program to measure and log their reaction times, an important skill for quick decision-making in sports.

Groups sketched and constructed mazes, programmed their Sphero bots to navigate them, and presented their designs and strategies. Additionally, educational games like crossword puzzles and word searches kept the learning process enjoyable.

The Outcomes

The week concluded with remarkable outcomes. Participants gained practical experience with Microbits and Sphero bots, learning to program, collect data, and visualize their findings. The program helped improve their technical skills in coding and data analysis.

Kids completed various tech projects, such as creating a Reaction Time Taster and a Wearable Step Counter, and engaged in exciting Sphero Bot Challenges. Through group activities and participants developed stronger teamwork, communication, and leadership abilities.

The programme also provided reflective insights on how technology can improve personal fitness, promoting critical thinking. The combination of educational and fun activities ensured a balanced approach to learning, making the experience both enriching and enjoyable.
