The DaYii Machine Learning Project Day
Overview
On 6 July 2024, DaYii Peer Leaders from various cities across Scotland including Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Armadale, Paisley, and Stirling gathered at CodeBase Edinburgh for an inspiring and transformative day of learning and growth. This event is part of the BBC Children in Need and DataKirk’s Youth Internship Initiative (DaYii), focusing on machine learning and data science. 24 young people (13 boys and 11 girls) aged 14-22 from Scotland made it to the remarkable event.
Event Highlights
- Introduction and Presentations: Peer Leaders took centre stage, sharing their learning outcomes with confidence and enthusiasm.
- Leadership and Coordination: The event was expertly anchored by Timi Olanrewaju, supported by Onivaha L. and Edoghogho Omo-Obi.
- Special Guest Appearance: Dakarayi Zvekare delivered an inspiring and motivational speech, emphasising the importance of resilience and networking which has helped her gain clarity in her career.
Skills Development
The Peer Leaders engaged in practical exercises, using data to train images for machine models. This hands-on experience not only enhanced their technical skills but also fostered teamwork and problem-solving abilities.
